I realize that Northumberland's motives to place Jane on the throne were not really spiritual in the truest sense, but were probably based, in part, on the fact that the protestants would have to return the riches they had stolen from the catholic church should the catholics return to power. Burt wouldn't it had made better sense to get Edward to change the succession to the throne by making Elizabeth Queen over Mary? I think he would have easily agreed to this since he too was protestant and so was Elizabeth. In fact, wasn't his regard for Mary unfavorable anyway?
Of course, the general public was not as against Mary as yet. Their opinion towards Mary turned against her after she came into power and was so harsh on her subjects. Perhaps it was because Jane was there and more readily available to take the throne while Elizabeth was elsewhere? |
